The twelfth national conference of the Welsh Centre of Crime and Social Justice was held in Gregynog on 24-25 April 2023. We were delighted to welcome practitioners from public and voluntary services, policy-makers, and academics across all career stages and from across Wales to share research and experiences of crime and justice in Wales.
Importantly, we used the opportunity of getting together to discuss and debate ways of learning from research and evidence and work together to improve the workings of the criminal justice system for all those affected by crime – victims and those committing crime, communities affected by crime and criminal justice responses and those working in the system – from police officers to probation and the courts.
This year, we were honoured to be joined by Jane Hutt, WG Minister for Social Justice and Dame Vera Baird, Independent Adviser to the Welsh Government on Justice Devolution. The Minister for Social Justice set out the Welsh Government’s plans and ambitions for justice in Wales and Dame Baird provided an outline of her experiences of crime and justice over her career and her initial thoughts on the role and to support the WG in its ambitions.
It is great to see Welsh Government listening to academic and practice voices on plans for the devolution of justice and the Welsh Centre for Crime and Social Justice and its members are looking forward to offering research insights and views, in particular on youth justice and probation but also beyond.
